Special Needs Pets

This is our Special Needs Pets page, its purpose is to feature pets who in spite of their handicaps survived and are enjoying their lives (with some help). Some of the residents here at The Humane Society's Pets Fur People are very special and unique individuals that may have experienced some difficult times in their lives, and their path to the HSOET may not have been an easy one. They would make wonderful pets but are often lost among the many adoptable healthy ones and need a little more exposure and attention to find their matching owners. Please take a look below and see if your forever friend might be listed with these very special residents.

Special Needs Pets: Sugar

Special Needs Pets: Sugar

This is Sugar, a female shepherd mix. Sugar is about 8 years old and is a special-needs dog.

Sugar is deaf. She does know some basic hand signals. She walks on a leash and is house-trained. Sugar will do best in a household as the only dog and in a household with older children.

Sugar is a very special dog and not just because she’s deaf. She’s affectionate (loves to give kisses), playful (especially good at tug-of-war and shake the ducky), she is loyal, protective and likes being combed. She walks on a leash and responds easily to light tugs on her leash. Because of her deafness, she’s very good at picking up visual cues but it can take a bit of time to gain her trust; such an effort is time well spent – an investment joining a special dog with their special person! Are you up to the challenge of giving Sugar the loving, caring home she deserves.

Sugar has been spayed, is current on all her vaccinations including rabies, and she has been microchipped for identification purposes. When Sugar is adopted, she will receive a gift of 30 days of free pet health insurance. If you are going to live with a deaf dog, you will have to learn a new way to communicate with Sugar, and Sugar will adapt quickly. All that’s required is a willingness to learn and to give Sugar a second chance for a loving, understanding, family.
